The Story of Atatürk's Piano...

The piano, which is invaluable as a memorabilia, was bought from an auction of a family's possessions in Istanbul in 1983. In that year I was the manager of Pera Palace Hotel and I was familiar with pianos as I had had many old and valuable pianos repaired. When I had the piano polished, I paid more than I did when I bought it. The carpenter, who was 75 years old, told me after he had completed the repair work that he had never seen such a piano. When I inquired him what really was different about it, he told me that French pianos had wooden clasps whereas this one had iron ones. He explained that this was the first piano with iron clasps he had ever seen and it had the quality of being in tune for a long time.

In 1983, during the Anatolian civilizations Exhibition in Istanbul I worked as a guide for Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis.

While I was guiding Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis through the Harem of Topkapı Palace, I saw there a similar piano to the one I had at home. I examined the piano in detail with the permission the manager of the Museum. It was was an exact copy of mine. A few years later, I asked a piano dealer in Horhor about the piano in Harem. I was informed that it was one of three pianos which were ordered by The Ottoman Empire to the French Kingdom. The pianos were meant to be played Classical Turkish Music on. He told me that he sold the second piano to a collector, and the third piano was the one, to which Atatürk listened occasionally and which Atatürk gave as a present to his friend Topal Osman. The third piano was lost for a long time. I was deeply moved by what I had learnt about the piano. After a search made by my late mother-in-law, we learnt that the person we had bought the piano from was actually the daughter-in-law of Topal Osman.

We have been taking good care of the piano at which our daughter learnt how to play the piano for twenty years.
